Derek hails from North Carolina and attended North Carolina State University as a scholar athlete playing football for four years.

After graduating with a degree in Sports Management, Derek was accepted into an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) post-graduate internship program at Disney World in Orlando, FL working as a Sports Manager at Disney’s Wide World of Sports, now known as ESPN Wide World of Sports. After 10 months as an intern, he was hired full-time and was responsible for planning and executing championship games for college and high school markets across the country. Derek worked at Disney one and a half years before he made a complete shift in his career to join Sanofi in 2003 for his first opportunity as pharmaceutical sales professional based in Orlando, FL.

Derek promoted brands in various therapeutic areas such as Urology, Cardiovascular, Central Nervous System, and Bio-Surgery. He held rolls of increasing responsibility and in 2012; he was promoted to a District Sales Manager position in Los Angeles, CA. In this role, Derek fostered an environment for success, leading his team to achieve numerous sales recognitions, most notably the Top one percent International Sales Award, within two years.

Following his success in LA, Derek assumed more opportunities to expand the breadth of his experience when he moved to Sanofi’s headquarters in Bridgewater, NJ, and to take on an operations role as Sales Force Effectiveness Manger for the Diabetes Business Unit where he was responsible for reporting and analytics for sales VPs.

His passion for people led him to his next role as Director of Management Development, where he re-established the formal management development process at Sanofi for individual contributors aspiring to become field sales managers. Now in his 14th year at Sanofi, he just recently assumed the role of Regional Business Leader in Washington, DC responsible for the sales goals and performance across four states, including the District, and 70 personnel.

Derek truly believes that the key to his success is summed up by one of his favorite and popular quotes by an author unknown: Be stubborn about your goals, but flexible about your method.

He commented, “The sales industry is ever evolving, and the more we can remain nimble, adaptable to change, yet, focused on our goals, the likelihood of us achieving our greatest potential is that much more conceivable.”
